Nuit des Musées @Maison Tavel

During the Nuit des Musées, the Maison Tavel hosts an immersive experience curated by Ensemble Vide, featuring Japanese artist Tomoko Sauvage. Known for her hybrid instruments combining water, ceramics, underwater amplification, and electronics, Sauvage transforms the historic space with sound installations. Highlights include Buloklok, a sonic timepiece of underwater glass sculptures in the vault, Waterbowls-Concert, where submerged microphones in porcelain bowls create an electro-aquatic sound, and Vaisseau Sonore, a sound walk blending text and sound throughout the museum. The sound itself becomes material, offering a unique sensory exploration.

In collaboration with the Photo Elysée Museum, the “Dialogues On Humanity” exhibition explores how photography can deepen our understanding of humanitarian principles. Through five themed sections, the images encourage reflection on global crises and the significance of humanitarian efforts. Each set of photographs is paired with questions to stimulate dialogue and invite visitors to share their reactions. This project is a joint effort by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Photo Elysée Museum, and the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Immerse yourself in 15,000 years of Geneva history, reinterpreted by New York artist Carol Bove, born in Geneva in 1971. The exhibition takes a fresh look at the MAH collection, inviting visitors to follow a timeline from regional archaeological discoveries to the most recent contemporary pieces. Presented chronologically, the works take a creative, anthropological, interactive and educational approach. Between ancient artifacts, masterpieces and everyday objects, this new Carte Blanche revisits the museum space, blurring the boundaries between art and everyday objects. An invitation to touch, feel and observe in a new way, free from convention, to redefine our relationship with art and the museum.

This collective exhibit curated by Marie Maertens explores the multifaceted symbolism of water as both a serene and tumultuous force. It evokes idyllic visions of travel and connection, yet also embodies destruction and the poignant weight of forced departures. Water, as a source of life and emotion, intertwines dreams and despair, summer joy, and the intimate bonds it nurtures. Its fluidity mirrors human experiences, flowing through memory, loss, and desire, resonating with the deepest layers of our existence. Through this poetic and evocative lens, the exhibit becomes a testament to water’s role as a mirror of our emotions and histories.

The Xippas Gallery presents “Forever in Motion,” a group exhibition featuring renowned contemporary artists like Joseph Cornell, Ólafur Elíasson, Philippe Hiquily, Robert Irwin, Tony Oursler, Steven Parrino, Jesús Rafael Soto, Takis, and Jean Tinguely. These artists, spanning different generations and artistic movements, delve into the theme of movement in various forms—mechanical, optical, conceptual, and metaphysical. Through kinetic structures and immersive environments, the exhibition blurs the lines between stillness and dynamism, presence and illusion, redefining our experience of art and space.

Invited by the MAH, the “la Caixa” Foundation proposes, through the works of eighteen artists from its collection, an exploration of contemporary art through the prism of the past with L’image revenante. Inspired by the world of Marcel Duchamp, this exhibition explores the ways in which artists confront art history and tradition: through homage, quotation, parody or opposition. Works by Mike Kelley, Vanessa Beecroft, Cindy Sherman, Julian Schnabel, Antonio Saura and Sherrie Levine are presented for the first time in Geneva, the historic center of the Reformation and of debates on the power and persistence of images.

The contemporary art collection of the “la Caixa” Foundation, created in the mid-1980s, has become a benchmark in Europe and one of the most important in the world.

Opening Wednesday, December 11, 18:00.

Class photos are a true social ritual and remain one of the few printed images that today’s children still get to keep and reflect on. Alongside early writing works and creative activities, the class photo becomes a valuable record of a school journey. Often signed by classmates on the back, it is a cherished memento for some, though disliked by others.

This exhibition explores the evolution of class photos in Carouge, from the early 20th century to its end, highlighting significant changes—shifting from stiff poses to more relaxed, humorous, and playful expressions.

Guided tours, lectures and workshops will be part of this exhibition.
