Leaving the Island

This collective exhibit curated by Marie Maertens explores the multifaceted symbolism of water as both a serene and tumultuous force. It evokes idyllic visions of travel and connection, yet also embodies destruction and the poignant weight of forced departures. Water, as a source of life and emotion, intertwines dreams and despair, summer joy, and the intimate bonds it nurtures. Its fluidity mirrors human experiences, flowing through memory, loss, and desire, resonating with the deepest layers of our existence. Through this poetic and evocative lens, the exhibit becomes a testament to water’s role as a mirror of our emotions and histories.

Invited by the MAH, the “la Caixa” Foundation proposes, through the works of eighteen artists from its collection, an exploration of contemporary art through the prism of the past with L’image revenante. Inspired by the world of Marcel Duchamp, this exhibition explores the ways in which artists confront art history and tradition: through homage, quotation, parody or opposition. Works by Mike Kelley, Vanessa Beecroft, Cindy Sherman, Julian Schnabel, Antonio Saura and Sherrie Levine are presented for the first time in Geneva, the historic center of the Reformation and of debates on the power and persistence of images.

The contemporary art collection of the “la Caixa” Foundation, created in the mid-1980s, has become a benchmark in Europe and one of the most important in the world.

Opening Wednesday, December 11, 18:00.

The exhibition “I Am an Old Phenomenon” by Ann Shelton at the Maison de l’enfance et de l’adolescence delves into the traditional beliefs and knowledge surrounding the medicinal, magical, and spiritual uses of plants. Collaborating with the Fondation Convergences, the artist pays tribute to wise women, herbalists, and witches by revisiting knowledge marginalized by Christianity and capitalism. Through photographs of still lifes inspired by Ikebana, Shelton encourages us to rethink our connection to nature and reconnect with ancient wisdom in the face of environmental urgency.
