Calixto Bieito completes his Russian opera cycle at the Grand Théâtre de Genève with a new production of Modest Mussorgsky’s Khovantchina, a grand choral opera about brutal power struggles in 17th-century Russia. The work explores the conflict between three socio-political forces: the Westernizing Prince Golitsin, the conservative boyars led by Prince Ivan Khovansky, and the Old Believers, a sectarian religious group. The opera, originally unfinished due to Mussorgsky’s early death, is presented here in Dmitri Shostakovich’s orchestration, with a finale by Igor Stravinsky, blending Russian tradition with forward-looking musical elements.

Bieito’s production, with Alejo Pérez conducting, places a strong focus on the central female character, Marfa, played by mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis. The cast includes Dmitri Ulyanov as Prince Ivan Khovansky and Vladislav Sulimsky as Boyar Shaklovity, with the Grand Théâtre’s Chorus and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.  The show runs for approximately 4 hours and 15 minutes, with two intermissions.

Lola Giouse’s production of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac reinvents the classic play with a fresh, contemporary perspective, using live music, an all-female cast, and a queer, feminist lens to explore the love triangle between Cyrano, Roxane, and Christian. By moving beyond the traditional portrayal of the play as a showcase for a single actor, Giouse reclaims the text, infusing it with new meaning while addressing contemporary utopias. Drawing from her own experience as a young actress who once played Cyrano, she offers a joyful and collective reinterpretation that invites the cast and audience to explore multiple identities and declare their love freely.

In this performance, Marie-Caroline Hominal, dressed in shimmering jeans, moves through a fantastical world dominated by a pink set designed by her brother, artist David Hominal. The stage features large panels with changing textures, fleeting tones, and repetitive patterns, onto which the dancer projects her shadow, stories, dreams, and doubts. Marie-Caroline plays with repetition, collage, and formal gestures, creating a sense of distance, self-deprecation, and reflection. This is the third time Marie-Caroline has invited an artist to collaborate with her, and for this piece, she works alongside her brother to merge their artistic practices, exploring the intersection of their respective aesthetic universes.

In La Tempête ou la Voix du Vent, Shakespeare’s tale unfolds with a storm that shipwrecks King Alonso and his son Ferdinand on a mystical island inhabited by the monstrous Caliban and the ethereal Ariel. Prospero, a sorcerer and exiled Duke of Milan, plots revenge while orchestrating Ferdinand’s love for his daughter Miranda. Through reality and fantasy, malice and drama, Shakespeare’s final play offers both magic and truth.
